What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Texas finally learned of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day symbolizes freedom, a time for reflection, education, and celebration of African American culture and achievements. It has evolved into a holiday that promotes unity, awareness, and a commitment to addressing the ongoing challenges by the African American community.

Why is Juneteenth Important to Our Youth & Communities?

Juneteenth is a significant celebration that marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. For our youth and communities, it serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, freedom, and the ongoing struggle for equality. By learning about this pivotal moment in history, young people can appreciate the sacrifices made for their rights and understand the importance of social justice today. Celebrating Juneteenth fosters a sense of pride and unity encouraging future generations to advocate for a more equitable society.
